Mouse DPI Analyzer
Your mouse might not be running the DPI you think it is. Measure your real DPI right here in your browser. Grab a ruler, make one straight swipe, and you will know your true number in under two minutes. No download, no signup.
Click Start Test, then move your mouse in a straight line
exactly the target distance, measured with a ruler.
| Run | Counts | Distance | DPI |
|---|
Needs a physical mouse and a ruler. Touchpads and touchscreens cannot measure mouse DPI.
How to Use the Analyzer
- Mark a line on your desk with a ruler. Longer is better, 10 cm or more gives the cleanest reading.
- Enter that distance above and pick the matching unit.
- Hit Start Test and move your mouse in one straight line across the exact distance.
- Click or press Esc to finish. Run it three times and trust the median.
How This DPI Test Works
The tool counts the raw movement your browser sees while you move the mouse across the distance you measured. Then it does simple math:
DPI = movement counts ÷ inches moved
It requests unadjusted raw input, so your Windows pointer speed does not pollute the number. One honest note: this measures what your browser can observe, not a chip-level firmware readout. Treat it as the most honest estimate you can get without lab gear.
What Your Result Means
If the number lands near 400, 800, 1600, or 3200, that is almost certainly your active DPI stage. Mice ship with round-number stages, and a careful test usually lands within a few percent of the real setting.
If the number is double what you expected, you probably bumped your DPI button. Gaming mice cycle stages with one click, and it is easy to hit mid-game. If your aim suddenly feels off, check the active stage before touching your in-game sensitivity.
Tips for an Accurate Reading
- Turn off Enhance pointer precision in Windows before testing.
- Keep browser zoom at 100% for every run.
- Use the mousepad you actually play on, and keep it clean.
- Move slow, straight, and stop exactly on your mark.
- Charge wireless mice first. A dying battery makes the sensor skip.
FAQ
How can I check the DPI of my mouse?
Use the analyzer above: measure a distance with a ruler, enter it in the tool, and swipe your mouse across that exact distance. You get your real DPI in under two minutes with no download. Gaming mice also show the exact stored DPI in the brand software, like Logitech G Hub or Razer Synapse.
Is 800 or 1600 DPI better for gaming?
Neither wins by default. Most competitive FPS players use 400 or 800 DPI for finer crosshair control, but 1600 DPI works fine if you lower in-game sensitivity to match. What matters is eDPI, your DPI times your in-game sensitivity. Pick one DPI and keep it consistent.
Does Windows pointer speed change my DPI?
No. DPI is a hardware setting stored in your mouse. Windows pointer speed only rescales cursor movement on screen. That is why you should set pointer speed to the middle notch and disable Enhance pointer precision before testing.
Why does my mouse feel different when the software is closed?
Your mouse is probably running its onboard memory profile instead of your software profile. Many gaming mice store a separate DPI on the device, and the software only overrides it while open. Save your profile to the mouse's onboard memory so it stays the same either way.
Can I test mouse DPI on a Mac?
Yes. This analyzer runs in any browser, so it works on macOS too. Mac has no built-in DPI readout, only a tracking speed slider, which makes a browser test the easiest option. Keep tracking speed unchanged across runs.
